Moab Weekend - May 3-5, 2013

On Friday night, Daddy hopped in a rental mini-van with Emma, Aspen, Uncle Clay, Aunt Kristen, 4 bikes and a whole bunch of gear for timing a mountain bike race.  They got to Moab after midnight. (This is the only picture I have of the Dotys - I was going to take a big group picture on our Sunday hike, but that never happened.)

At 4:30! in the morning! they all had to wake up and go out to the bike race.  They were done early in the afternoon and got to spend the rest of the weekend exploring.

Lincoln and I stayed home on Friday night so that we could go to a baby shower on Saturday afternoon.  We got to Moab on Saturday evening.  We got to splash in a cold pool, play in a hot tub, go for ice cream with the Dotys and we all shared one little hotel room.  We had to move the table into the tiny, tiny kitchen space in order to set up Lincoln's port-a-crib and Emma and Aspen slept in sleeping bags on the floor.

On our way out of town on Sunday, we went into Arches National Park for a hike.  Lincoln is so cute!  He wore his hat most of the time, his sunglasses for a while and every time he kicked off a shoe, he would start saying "shoe! shoe!", so we never lost one of those.  A lady, who sounded like she was from Australia, even asked if she could take a picture of my "cute little mate".

I started out hiking with the Dotys and left James and Linc to catch up.  James is a much faster hiker than I am, so I had no doubt that he'd catch up quickly.  When we reached the first arch (about a mile hike) and they still hadn't caught up, I decided to go back and look for them.  They were about a half mile into the "hike".  Lincoln had flat-out-refused to go in the backpack and James had carried him most of the way that far in his arms.  Lincoln was happily throwing dirt out onto the trail and James was not so happy.

We gave up on hiking and turned it into play time.  Lincoln had fun in all the sand.

He climbed through these rocks a dozen or more times.  I'd gone as far as Landscape Arch before I turned around to find my guys.  James went a little farther than Landscape Arch when he went on a solo hike, but turned around again because we had a long way to go to get home.

Lincoln had a juice break on this awesome dead tree. And eventually we made it back to the car.  Linc was not happy to get back into the car for another long road trip - even if we were going home.

For awhile, I gave Linc my phone to play with.  He just touches icons at random, but I ended up with this self-portrait!

We drove through a small town called Wellington - there was a fabulous playground right next to the highway.  So we stopped for an hour to let Lincoln play.  He laughed as soon as he saw the playground and even started walking across the grass toward it without us.  He tried out everything, the slides, the climbing wall, the swings, all the ladders and tunnels. We had the entire playground to ourselves.  Most of the features were for "big kids", so Linc had a lot of attention from us as he explored.  We still had a scare on a big, big slide.

Lincoln climbed the steps by himself to get to the top (I followed him up for fall-prevention) and James waited to catch him at the bottom.  At the top, Linc got nervous. It was the biggest slide he's ever seen.  One of the big long straight metal ones.  I helped him sit down at the top and we tried to talk him into going down on his own. Finally, James walked up until he was right next to the slide, maybe at the top third.  I pushed Lincoln to get him started and Linc spread his legs wide - so that he could use his shoes to slow himself down.  One of his rubber shoes caught against the metal side and Linc turned in the slide and BEGAN FALL OVER THE EDGE - the same side that James was on, so James just snatched him out of the air and we went on to another part of the playground. Thank goodness for hero Daddys - Linc was a long, long way off the ground.  No harm done, but I won't be pushing Linc down a slide again.

Even after an hour, Lincoln was not done and he was not happy to go back into the car.  We'll probably be stopping at a lot of playgrounds on roadtrips in the future. I hope. It was a fun weekend.

April/May Double Date - Moab Adventure - April 29-May 1, 2011

Tiffany and Brian (aren't they cute!?) came adventuring with us.  Once they got to NSL, we all packed into the Outlaw and hit the road.

In true Utah style, it was raining / snowing in April and a huge accident on Hwy 6 added a couple hours to our drive.  Luckily, we had a cabin reserved at a campground in Moab and even in the middle of the night we were able to get into our weekend digs.  Tiny little cabin with two full-size beds (bring your own bedding).  One tiny little wooden tv tray style table, tiny garbage can and an electric heater.  Bathrooms/showers down the road a little bit.  A bit crowded inside the cabin once James' mountain bike joined us in the room.  It had to defrost from the layer of ice and grime from the snowy drive.

Saturday April 30 - Mountain Biking / Hiking

First thing, pick up Brian's rental mountain bike from Poison Spider.  Load up the bikes and head out to the chosen trail head.

While the guys were mountain biking.  Tiffany and I went exploring.  A quick drive through downtown Moab for gas and a wander into Arches National Park.  We planned to do a hike out to an arch that I'd never hiked to before, but we only had half an hour or so before we needed to pick up our men.

Meanwhile, the guys were exploring the Gemini Bridges trail.

Somewhere near this overlook, Brian's rental bike broke.  The part of the bike that connects the pedals and the "go".  So no matter how Brian pedalled, the bike would not be propelled forward.  He could go downhill just fine, but had to push the bike across the flats and any uphills.  Tiffany and I ended up driving up the bottom of the Gemini Bridges jeep trail until we connected with Brian and James.  Then loading up the bikes to get back to Poison Spider.  We were over an hour late turning the bike back in, but because of the broken bike there wasn't any penalty for that.  In fact, Poison Spider refunded Brian's rental fee.  Great customer service there!
Sunday May 1 - we chose to do a little hiking in Arches National Park before the long drive back to NSL and on to Idaho Falls (for B&T)

We chose Delicate Arch - not a terribly long hike, but the arch is on everything - license plates and billboards.  Plus, Tiffany had never been.  And I really like the very, very short side trail over to some Indian petroglyphs.

Brian jumping over a rock cairn (I think Tiffany made him jump those rocks a dozen times before getting the perfect picture).

Jessi and James - Delicate Arch trail.  I need to watch my feet while hiking, because I tend to trip on things if I'm checking out the scenery.  For a little while, I decided to follow James' footsteps down the trail.  Of course he noticed his pink shadow and began hiking in small loops and jumping over rocks and small cracks for me to follow him.  We both had a good laugh when he walked backwards for a few steps and I tried to copy.

It was a very fun hike, a very fun trip.  Always glad when family can join us for adventures.

Sadly the weekend was over.  Thankfully we all had an uneventful drive back to our respective homes.  Let's do it again!  This has to count for our April and May dates because James is leaving for Alaska and summer work in just a few short days.

Moab / Arches National Park - April 9-11, 2010

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that Kathleen and Brian are going to BYU-Idaho. We love it EVEN MORE that they make an event out of the beginning or end of a semester and go adventuring with us. This time, we went to Moab and Arches National Park to mountain bike and hike.

(Moab/Arches tip #1 - Charge all your batteries before leaving
home. **A few of these photos are mine, but most are Kathleens**)

James checked out a four-man tent from the gear closet at backcountry.com. Because it is early April, we were concerned that the weather might be chilly (last year, it snowed down in Bryce Canyon!). So he checked out an expedition-weight super tent that looks like half of a soccer ball. We got into Moab at 10:30 pm and finally found a campsite at midnight.

(Moab/Arches tip #2 - no matter how early-season you think it is,
reserve a campsite. Otherwise you may have to spend $40 for the last site in a
campground in the middle of Moab - the one without a picnic table)

We had to set up the tent for the first time in the dark. And discovered that this gear-closet version DID NOT HAVE A FOOTPRINT or even a floor!
The rainfly made a good make-shift floor and protected the gear from dirt. But ASAP on Saturday morning, we relocated to a cheaper, prettier, quieter campsite on the Colorado River.

James has a mountain bike that we brought along and we had already reserved a second mountain bike from Poison Spider.

(Moab/Arches tip #3 - if you don't have a mountain bike with the
serious shocks, rent one. And of course, RESERVE it ahead of time!
Oh, and riding gloves are a great idea.)

Kathleen and I were up first for a quick 6-mile ride from inside Arches National Park on the Willow Flats Road out to the trailhead of the Sovereign Single Track that James & Brian were going to ride. It was a perfect day for riding. 70-ish degrees, a few clouds and a good breeze.

We had to turn the fancy rental bike back in at 5 pm, so we stopped by the grocery store and picked up supplies for a hamburger dinner. We drove back into Arches and grilled up some burgers!

(Moab/Arches Tip #4 - It may be a good idea NOT to unload everything
at the campsite. When we were ready to cook dinner, we had the grill and
all the foodstuffs with us in the car and could make dinner anywhere!)

Well, Kathleen rode around the picnic area a bit.

And so did Brian.

James actually did all the grilling - I just set out condiments and tried to keep the napkins and light-stuff from blowing away.

After dinner, we decided to take an evening hike to Delicate Arch. We passed most of the people hiking their way out from the arch. It is 1.5 miles one-way and we made it to the arch just as it began to be really dark. We almost had the arch to ourselves!
We had flashlights and head lamps, but I was the only one to use one. Once we got past the section where I was worried about sprained ankles, I turned it off again. It was so nice to walk in the dark and watch the stars come out.

On Sunday, our only plan was to sleep in as long as we could. Then hike the Devils Garden Trail at the end of the road in Arches. Then get on the road back to SLC before too late.

(Moab/Arches tip #5 - HAVE FUN!)
Early along the trail, James found this unusual rock laying in the dirt. So he picked it up and settled it into the ground like a fence post.

This is what we found on our hike back out!

Brian - flying along!

This picture is here as proof - I WAS NOT ALWAYS the slowest, last hiker on the uphills!

The snowy mountains in the background are the La Sal Mountains and they were such a beautiful backdrop for the red sandstone.
James testing out the stability of this crazy looking boulder.

Hiking along the top of the sandstone 'fin'. Aren't those snowy mountains wonderful!

(Moab/Arches tip #6 - watch closely for wildlife!)
We saw a few lizards:
