Oquirrh Mountain Temple - July 29, 2009

For date night this week, we attended the open house for the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. It is difficult to stand in line for so long and then have such a quick walk through, but there was a cookie at the end for being good! The open house format was very similar to the Draper Temple open house. There was a short video about temples - this time broadcast in air-conditioned tents in the parking lot. Then a 'quiet' tour with signs in each room and ushers at every intersection to help keep the people walking. Then we got to sit for a few minutes in the sealing room for a short talk about eternal families - this time it was twice as long because the elders were translating everything into spanish for a family. And then out the back door to the hospitality tent for a bottled water and a cookie. James scored two!

The temple is built up on a little ridge, so it has an unobstructed view of the Salt Lake valley. You can see the Jordan River Temple and the Draper Temple and the cluster of sky scrapers surrounding the Salt Lake Temple downtown. The pre-tour video gave a little history about the settling of the area to the west of the Jordan River - hard to imagine the valley without all the homes and shopping and traffic.
