Moab Weekend - May 3-5, 2013

On Friday night, Daddy hopped in a rental mini-van with Emma, Aspen, Uncle Clay, Aunt Kristen, 4 bikes and a whole bunch of gear for timing a mountain bike race.  They got to Moab after midnight. (This is the only picture I have of the Dotys - I was going to take a big group picture on our Sunday hike, but that never happened.)

At 4:30! in the morning! they all had to wake up and go out to the bike race.  They were done early in the afternoon and got to spend the rest of the weekend exploring.

Lincoln and I stayed home on Friday night so that we could go to a baby shower on Saturday afternoon.  We got to Moab on Saturday evening.  We got to splash in a cold pool, play in a hot tub, go for ice cream with the Dotys and we all shared one little hotel room.  We had to move the table into the tiny, tiny kitchen space in order to set up Lincoln's port-a-crib and Emma and Aspen slept in sleeping bags on the floor.

On our way out of town on Sunday, we went into Arches National Park for a hike.  Lincoln is so cute!  He wore his hat most of the time, his sunglasses for a while and every time he kicked off a shoe, he would start saying "shoe! shoe!", so we never lost one of those.  A lady, who sounded like she was from Australia, even asked if she could take a picture of my "cute little mate".

I started out hiking with the Dotys and left James and Linc to catch up.  James is a much faster hiker than I am, so I had no doubt that he'd catch up quickly.  When we reached the first arch (about a mile hike) and they still hadn't caught up, I decided to go back and look for them.  They were about a half mile into the "hike".  Lincoln had flat-out-refused to go in the backpack and James had carried him most of the way that far in his arms.  Lincoln was happily throwing dirt out onto the trail and James was not so happy.

We gave up on hiking and turned it into play time.  Lincoln had fun in all the sand.

He climbed through these rocks a dozen or more times.  I'd gone as far as Landscape Arch before I turned around to find my guys.  James went a little farther than Landscape Arch when he went on a solo hike, but turned around again because we had a long way to go to get home.

Lincoln had a juice break on this awesome dead tree. And eventually we made it back to the car.  Linc was not happy to get back into the car for another long road trip - even if we were going home.

For awhile, I gave Linc my phone to play with.  He just touches icons at random, but I ended up with this self-portrait!

We drove through a small town called Wellington - there was a fabulous playground right next to the highway.  So we stopped for an hour to let Lincoln play.  He laughed as soon as he saw the playground and even started walking across the grass toward it without us.  He tried out everything, the slides, the climbing wall, the swings, all the ladders and tunnels. We had the entire playground to ourselves.  Most of the features were for "big kids", so Linc had a lot of attention from us as he explored.  We still had a scare on a big, big slide.

Lincoln climbed the steps by himself to get to the top (I followed him up for fall-prevention) and James waited to catch him at the bottom.  At the top, Linc got nervous. It was the biggest slide he's ever seen.  One of the big long straight metal ones.  I helped him sit down at the top and we tried to talk him into going down on his own. Finally, James walked up until he was right next to the slide, maybe at the top third.  I pushed Lincoln to get him started and Linc spread his legs wide - so that he could use his shoes to slow himself down.  One of his rubber shoes caught against the metal side and Linc turned in the slide and BEGAN FALL OVER THE EDGE - the same side that James was on, so James just snatched him out of the air and we went on to another part of the playground. Thank goodness for hero Daddys - Linc was a long, long way off the ground.  No harm done, but I won't be pushing Linc down a slide again.

Even after an hour, Lincoln was not done and he was not happy to go back into the car.  We'll probably be stopping at a lot of playgrounds on roadtrips in the future. I hope. It was a fun weekend.

Ensign Peak - April 29, 2013

Daddy and Lincoln decided to hike up Ensign Peak this afternoon.  Lincoln wasn't ready to go in the backpack at first, so there was a lot of exploring on foot.

Lincoln hiked about half way up all by himself.

It was a beautiful day, with a beautiful view.

Eventually, Lincoln got in the backpack for a ride.  My handsome guys!

After the hike, there was more exploring to do.  Less than a mile round-trip took several hours to complete.  Looks like we can only go hiking if we have plenty of time built in for exploring.

End of Ski Season - Alta - April 27, 2013

A perfect last ski day of the season.  We got there just as the snow was softening up (from being frozen overnight) and we left when it got too slushy-warm.  Lincoln did fantastic.  He looked so stylish in his sunglasses and he wore them the entire time we were outside.  Linc took his nap in the backpack.

I tried to take him out of the pack to let him nap more comfortably, but he woke up.  Just in time for some lunch.  This is cute-stuff in the parking lot.  Sunglasses, no hat and sloppy boots.

Hogle Zoo - April 26, 2013

We went to Hogle Zoo today. It was beautiful and not too crowded, so we had a wonderful time.  I took a million and one pictures, but I'm only sharing my favorites.

A big section of the zoo near the main entrance is under construction to build a new "Savannah" area - for the lions and a big section for the giraffes, ostriches, zebras and other compatible animals to be together.  The giraffe's current area is pretty small.  The garage doors into their indoor area are pretty impressive!  We'd love to go again next year when the giraffes have their new digs.

One of my favorite areas was for the seals.  There were great big windows to see underwater from lots of different angles.

And then a viewing area above water too.  This seal liked to swim upside down along the length of the pool and then dive deep and swim along the bottom the return length.

Lincoln had a pretty good view. James just picked him up to give him good height!

This is a LEGO polar bear.  Several areas around the zoo had Lego animals (we saw penguins, monkeys and turtles) or exhibits that included legos.

Lincoln's favorite animal was the polar bear.  He was the most active and would swim right up to the viewing window, push off the glass and out into his pool again.

Sometimes he would wander out of the water for a bit, and then dive back in.

VIDEO - Lincoln and James watching the polar bear (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUa78E9r8Vo). Lincoln was laughing a lot - until I got the video going - I only caught a little bit of laughs.

VIDEO - The polar bear pushing off the window (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oghP0cXGN0Q). This was the most crowded place we were in at the zoo.

Here's the polar bear's cousin - a little brown bear.  This guy wandered right up to our viewing window, but his two buddies were sleeping in the shade.

VIDEO - Lincoln playing at the top of some stairs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYvit6EsZyk). Linc was only mildly interested in the animals.  He preferred climbing stairs, climbing fences, playing in wood chips, crawling or climbing or running or hanging.  Our own little monkey.

I'm certain Linc will be more interested in live animals, sometime.  Today, he liked the ones he could climb on.

Dinosaur Play Place at City Creek Center - April 8, 2013

Lincoln and I went to City Creek Center to the play place in the food court on the recommendation of my friend Elizabeth and Linc's friends, Isaac and Oliver.  Elizabeth told me her boys love to climb on the dinosaurs and that sounded perfect for a rainy, cold day.  The first thing he did, before I could even take Linc's shoes off, was climb into this little dinosaur egg.

This green dinosaur was too big for Linc to climb onto by himself, but he could crawl through the tunnel made by it's neck.  And if I helped him up, he could slide down the nose or the tail.

These cute blue dinosaurs were also too steep for Linc to climb himself, but he could run underneath without stooping.  That was fun!

This dino-skull was a slide.  Climb up the stairs between the jaws and then slide down the back of the head.  Watch out for new friends!  This slide was mellow enough that Linc could also climb up the slide and go down the stairs.

Linc is standing on a 'rock' with a foot print in it.  There were several of these little platforms.  Lincoln is good enough at stairs and steps and curbs now, that he doesn't hesitate to step up and down on his own.

This cute pterodactyl is guarding it's eggs - two of the eggs are a little tunnel.

This one is 'flying' and creates another tunnel.

I think this maroon dinosaur was Lincoln's favorite.  He tried to climb up the face (too steep unless I helped).  And then he would slide down the side.  He tried climbing up the tail too, and almost got it.  But then he fell.  The entire floor is that soft spongy springy material, so even though he crashed pretty hard, he didn't get hurt.  After crying for a moment, he climbed right back up the tail (with my help) and stood on top of the dinosaur. "Ta Da!"

This purple dinosaur was the only 'big' dinosaur that Lincoln figured out how to climb by himself.  The dinosaurs are a soft plastic, so without socks the kids' feet have enough grip to climb them.  Lincoln could climb up the tail and then walk between the two ridges of spines to the head.  Then he would either sit and slide down the nose, or stand and jump to me.

Lincoln played for over an hour.  It did get more and more crowded with kids, but not too many that he couldn't play comfortably.  We had a lot of fun and we will definitely play here again.

Spring Skiing - April 3, 2013

We've been waiting to reintroduce Lincoln to skiing. Waiting for warm weather so that it would be fun to play in the snow and go for a ride in the backpack.  It's finally here!  This morning, we drove up to Alta and Lincoln and James took three runs.

Lincoln loved watching all the action from the chairlift.

While the boys took their runs, I found a lawn chair and got a little sun.  A little too much, my forehead and cheeks are pink.  Such a lovely day!  I would prefer to go skiing with my guys, but the cost of a lift ticket for a handful of runs just didn't make sense.  I didn't even take my gear.

Family photo!

James and Lincoln out on the hill.

And a photo of Lincoln on the chairlift.

Such a pretty day!  Linc and James are on the chair just passing the white lift tower in the middle of this photo.

And a few videos from today's adventures.

Video 2 - interview after first ski run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-kx3c83FgE)  I was impressed the Lincoln was wearing sunglasses. We bought them on our way to go skiing this morning and Lincoln wore them all around the store.  But he refused to let me put them on him at the resort. So James took Lincoln and the sunglasses and finally convinced Linc to wear his shades while they rode the lift.  Then he left them on (maybe because he was wearing mittens?) during the whole adventure.

Video 3 - Lincoln and James on the move - Lincoln sounds like an owl and someone on the slopes wants to know how old Linc is.  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-BwQugYo8E)

Video 4 - Lincoln and James' last run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYt3_MXCBJw)  Nice skills James - ski, hold the camera and talk to Linc.
