New Skis! - November 19, 2009

James re-funded his ski fund by selling last year's new skis. And James placed an order for this year's new skis. The Volkl Gotama. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. And finally, THEY'RE HERE!!
With the matching T-Shirt. And fancy AT bindings. (Next step is to get the bindings mounted...)

And I just thought you'd like to see how James is doing with Backcountry's beard contest... 1 1/2 months down, 1 month to go... He looks like a rugged mountain man!

My Mom is in town!!! - November 5-9, 2009

I had to beg for a couple months - as soon as Craig & Ariana got engaged and announced their wedding date to the family... I begged all the family in Idaho to come to Utah for their wedding. And it worked! My mom came to spend a long weekend and we enjoyed the wedding and parties and got to be tourists in Salt Lake City.

Thursday: Mom flew in just at the end of my work week. And she brought me mail from Carter!

(Carter: THANK YOU for my special post card. I am really impressed with your drawing and writing your own name!)

Friday: Gateway for lunch at McGrath's Fish House. A little clothes shopping. A little wedding gift shopping. And ran into Uncle David, David & Kim & Logan just outside the Barnes & Noble on our way back to the car - couldn't have planned that if we tried! We stopped in the old train depot on our way out, I love the murals and stained glass windows.

After James got off work, we went to the Bountiful Temple for a session. Then drove up to Ogden for the family pre-wedding dinner. Yum!

Saturday: the morning was a bit hectic (that's another post), but the wedding was beautiful. And the temple grounds were pretty unique!

After wedding pictures and the Ogden Veterans Day parade, we stopped at Deseret Book and Wal-Mart and the stump. Visited at G&G's house and enjoyed a huge dinner at Maddox Steak House in Brigham City. Really enjoyed the reception and visiting with all the family.

Sunday: we slept in and that was heavenly. We almost made it to church on time - the closest we've been yet! Mom helped in the nursery (thank you!) & I gave a lesson about being thankful for the bodies Heavenly Father has given us. I didn't know I could sing "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" so quickly! We went to U.Doug & A.Barbs for dinner in Santaquin. They've got a beautiful home & the food was excellent! Thank you!

Monday: James had to work. Mom & I went exploring around temple square. We spent an hour at the Church History Library. We watched the Joseph Smith movie at the Joseph Smith Memorial - I still get teary-eyed and I've seen it before! We had lunch (the Swiss potato soup was really good, and of course, the rolls!) at the Lion House. We explored the Salt Lake City public Library - where we met up with James!

James grilled salmon and halibut for our dinner - yum! Then we loaded the luggage in the car and dropped into some craft stores before Mom's flight.

How can a long weekend be so short and go by so quickly!?! Mom - thank you for coming to Utah and spending some time with me. I NEEDED that and I love you!

Parable of the 10 virgins - November 7, 2009

I'd been looking forward to Craig & Ariana's wedding since our own wedding! James and I had been to the temple together and even done sealings, but we hadn't been to a temple marriage since our own. My mom was also in town - partly for the wedding, but mostly to spend time with me and extended family.

On Friday, as soon as James got home from work, we went to a session at the Bountiful Temple. Then hurried up to Ogden for the family dinner. We went to bed as soon as we got home because the wedding was scheduled for 10 and we needed to be inside the Ogden Temple at 0930. Which meant that we needed to leave the apartment early.

I REALLY didn't want to be late. So I told Mom & James that we needed to leave the apartment at 8 a.m. That was early. We'd get to the temple with almost an hour to spare.

We left the apartment at about 0810. I was feeling a bit smug and enjoyed the early morning drive to Ogden immensly. As we exited the freeway and headed into Ogden, I realized that I'd left my recommend in the pocket of the bag with my temple clothes.

The bag I'd used to go to the Bountiful Temple the night before.

The bag at home.

On the couch.

In North Salt Lake.

As soon as I exclaimed over my recommend, Mom realized her recommend was also with her temple clothes.

At the apartment.

In North Salt Lake.

James could have gone to the sealing. His recommend was in his wallet.

We briefly talked about staying in Ogden and helping to watch the children during the wedding or driving all the way home for our recommends.

I asked James to drive us back to the apartment. We'd never make it back to the temple by 0930, but it was worth a try.

The drive back to the apartment was NOT SMUG. I felt so sad. Mom came all the way to Utah for a wedding and we were going to miss it. James had his recommend and was going to miss the wedding to drive me 40 miles to and another 40 miles back from the apartment. I had been looking forward to being a part of my cousins' wedding and to holding hands with my James in the sealing room.

The second time we exited the freeway and headed into Ogden, I told Mom that I felt like we were living in the parable of the 10 virgins. We were waiting for a wedding, but when the time came, we weren't prepared. She said she'd been thinking of the parable also, but maybe there was just enough oil in our lamps.

We parked the car at 0950. Definitely late. So, so, so late. Met up with Trevor in the parking lot (He'd gotten off work early to try to go to Craig's wedding). Showed our recommends to the nice old men at the recommend desk. Found the entrance to the marriage waiting room - luckily, just inside the front doors! Traded our shoes for white socks and got to the marriage waiting room with just enough time for a round of quick hugs before being escorted up to the sealing room.

The sealer talked to Craig & Ariana about Time & All Eternity and how different that is from Until Death Do Us Part. He talked about how today is their own holiday - bigger than the 4th of July - bigger than Christmas! He also emphasized the newest unit of the church was the small family of Craig & Ariana Price. They still have their extended families, but they are now each other's primary family. Read the Proclamation on the Family and realize that The Father and The Mother are you. They stood to look in the mirrors - to look into eternity and then knelt at the altar to be sealed.

It was wonderful to hold hands with James & hear the blessings of the marriage covenant again.

I'm so grateful they invited us to participate in their sealing. I'm grateful we are worthy to enter the temple. I'm grateful to be a small family with my James and doubly grateful we were able to safely retrieve our recommends and be in the temple, in the sealing room, for their wedding.

Craig & Ariana - November 7, 2009

Congratulations Craig & Ariana!!! Thanks for the invite to the festivities, we had a wonderful time! Such a good time, I only took a few photos. . .

James is hiking for turns! - October 28 & 31, 2009

(1 month of beard growth for the Backcountry.com hair farming experiment - 1 month 3 weeks to go!)

This is "The Outlaw" which drove through the snow and carried the skis to the mountain that James hiked.

These are the footprints which marked the path through the snow on the mountain that James hiked.

These are other ski tracks left behind on the mountain that James hiked.

These are the trees that lined the gully that piled up the snow on the mountain that James hiked.

This is the Halloween moon that shined over the fresh snow that covered the mountain that James hiked. . . and skied down again.
(Yes, I'm jealous.)

Arches National Park - October 26, 2009

We finally made it into Arches National Park. With less than a day to explore, we mostly looked for arches from The Outlaw, but we did make time for the Delicate Arch Hike - 3 miles round trip.

On our way out of the park, we took a single-lane dirt road called Willow Flats Road. It was about 4 miles of bumpy, rocky, sandy road to the border of the park, then another 3 or 4 miles to the highway. Just outside the park, I came across a sign titled "Footprints in the Shores of Time."

And located dinosaur footprints!

And James finally, finally got to do a tiny bit of mountain biking along Willow Flats Road.

We made it back home after dark, just in time to unload the car and go to bed. Happy Adventuring!

Grand Junction & Aspen, CO wanderings - October 23-25, 2009

We've been planning to visit Moab & Arches National Park all summer, but waited for the 100+ degrees of summer to drop off into the 70s of fall. We finally had a long weekend (James took Monday off) and we hit the road.

Our destination, however, had already changed. James' buddy Tom (from Cordova) is living in Grand Junction, CO - just another 80 or so miles down I-70 past the turn-off to Moab. And Tom bribed us to come. Said we could stay at his house. Said he'd give us gas money for the drive back to SLC. Said we'd got mountain biking. Said he'd feed us salmon.

We rolled into Grand Junction just before midnight on Friday night. Tom woke James up at 4-ish (a.m. !!!) and they went out to Tom's job site - an hour or so away. Tom works for Halliburton and spent the weekend telling James about the company, about the work, about the perks and about the drawbacks. Just in case James might be interested in a job in natural gas mining.

They got home again before I was awake and caught a couple hours of sleep. Then we went exploring! Mountain biking was cancelled by some early morning rain & threatening clouds, so we hopped into Tom's truck and headed toward Aspen!

We ended up at Maroon Lake at the edge of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The snowy peaks in the background are the North and South Maroon Bells Peaks - both 14,000+ footers with SNOW! And it tried to snow a bit while we were there, so we didn't do any hiking.

More mountains near Maroon Lake.

We got back to Grand Junction pretty late, watched Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, and slept in on Sunday morning. Tom got called back into work, so James & I headed back toward Utah and Arches National Park.

On the way, we saw a sign for the Colorado National Monument and followed it into the hills just to the south of I-70 and just barely outside Grand Junction. It was a 23-mile drive through a plateau-and-canyon landscape.

Independence Monument - apparently you can climb (rock climbing - not hiking) to the top of the monument on the 4th of July - wild!

We got to Moab right at dusk and ate dinner at a Schezwan restaurant. The one campground in Arches National Park was full, so we found a campground along the Colorado River for $12. Pretty site, even in the dark, with plenty of trees to drop their leaves on the tent with the howling wind. The wind also drowned out any highway noise and the river was very quiet. Very dark out there - with lots and lots of stars!
