Backpacking to McKinley Lake/Father's Day - June 18-19, 2011

Every summer, for most of my life, has included a backpacking trip.  This summer it was done Alaska style.  Here is James in the attic, looking for backpacks.

McKinley Lake Trailhead - the official 'ready to hike' photo: Sharon, McKinley, Kathleen, James, Jessi and Dick.  Notice all the rain gear and hooded sweatshirts?  It 'dripped' a bit on the hike in.  Not truly rain, but not a dry hike either.

Hiking up the trail

Kathleen at Trail Sign - on the way into the McKinley Lake Cabin, we took the shorter trail - 2.3 miles total.  On the way out, we took the Pipeline Lakes Trail 2.8 miles total.

Jessi and James

We spent the night at the McKinley Lake cabin.  It is a forest service cabin with an outdoor grill, an indoor stove, wooden bunks, a big table and a big counter space. It was nice to have a place to sleep where I was certain of being dry!  We roasted hot dogs for dinner on this little outdoor grill.

After dinner we hiked up to the Lucky Strike Mine.  It was supposed to be a grand gold mine, but after decades of fund raising and a bit of work, no real gold came out of it.  Now it is a historical ruin.

McKinley and a tree stump.  The miners would cut down trees for the logs to help build cabins or mine supports or whatever else.  But the way that trees grow around here (by sprouting out of a dead tree and spreading their roots through the old, dead tree and eventually into the ground.  Then the old tree finally rots away and leaves the new tree with root systems that begin above ground)... means that the most useful part of the tree is 20 feet above the ground.  So they'd notch the tree, stand on a plank or something in that notch and then fell the tree up above the crazy roots.  Doesn't this old stump look like he's watching us?

Forest Service Marker

Mossy Log Bridge - in a few more years, you won't be able to tell this was a bridge at all!

Marten?  This was the most interesting wildlife we saw on the trip.  Kathleen spooked it up by the mine and he stopped part way up a tree to watch us take his picture.

As soon as we got back to the cabin, McKinley curled up on her sleeping bag for a nap.  So I climbed up above her for a photo op.

Sunday,. June 19, 2011 - Father's Day
At the cabin.  Before we left, Dick had prepared a devotional for our Sunday spiritual thought.  It was a very nice way to start a Sunday adventure.

Ready to hike back out

James and Jessi and McKinley at one of the Pipeline Lakes

The whole family

Dick and Sharon at another

Dick Sharon and McKinley coming out of the Alaska woods - the moss hanging from every branch is incredible.  And notice the boards - they're mostly lined with old fishing nets for traction.  There are very few sections of trail - especially going through the mountain meadows - that are not lined by boards.  If you step off the trail you're in squishy muskeg.

James tying his shoe - that's talent!

Kathleen, Sharon, Dick and James hiking

Pipeline Lakes Sign - so green with all that rain!  Luckily it was just overcast where we were hiking and not rainy today.

Pretty scenery with dead trees on an island in one of the lakes

Jessi baby bump - 28 weeks pregnant.  My pack had James' and my personal stuff, a water bladder, paper towels, toilet paper, and a little bit of food.  Not heavy at all.  James carried all of our sleeping gear and more food and more water and whatever else. Thanks Honey!

After we got back to the car, we ate lunch and then drove out the road.
The Million Dollar Bridge (because in the early 1900s it cost a million dollars to build it - in the 2000s, it cost much more than that to fix it!)

Childs Glacier - when the river is running high, the water undercuts the ice and ice 'calves' off the glacier and into the river.  Sometimes causing huge waves to ripple across the river to the far bank.  It wasn't very active today.

Family Photo

Most of us walked a one mile trail along the river to get to the glacier viewing point and Kathleen drove the truck to save us a walk back.  But there isn't enough room in the truck for five adults and one tired dog.  So Dick and Sharon got the "back, back seat".

A fantastic way to spend Father's Day - adventuring!

Stuff I've made... May 31, 2011

Apple pies baked for James early this spring. Yum!  I think apple pie is James' favorite breakfast.

Scarf and flowers crocheted for Maria

Flower rug crocheted for Hallie's baptism

Tiny crochet hats.  I've made several of the ear-flap hat (center with braids) for different things.  For Phoenix Price (Chad and Kelley) and for Michael Lian (John and Leah).  And of course, for our baby.  I made the football hats for Marcus Fernandez (Ramon & Emily).  And a couple more (of course) for our son.

I made several sets of these nursing blanket and matching diaper/burp cloths a couple years ago when a work friend was expecting a baby. I have a couple sets left, and this was the only one that wasn't extremely 'girly', so I've added it to my own baby stash.

I made this baby afghan a long time ago.  I don't think I even had a baby in mind when I made it.  And it has moved around with me.  Since I was taking pictures of "stuff I've made," I took a picture of this one too.

Baby Girl Simpson's afghan.  Looking forward to meeting my new niece!

My current project in progress - little baby afghan for Lincoln.   Getting close to finished, I just need to find another skein of the green yarn.

More upcoming projects:
  • hot pads for the cousins getting married this summer.
  • pieced orange and brown blanket for Lincoln.
  • newborn booties for Lincoln.
  • find/make? blessing outfit for Lincoln.
  • clothes for me (2 dresses down, 1 dress or shirt to go, 1 skirt to go).
  • Christmas stocking for Lincoln.

Photos from James & Little Bandito Update - May 27, 2011

We are having an interesting summer.

James is in Alaska mending fishing nets for his summer job (he learned some new skills this summer) and I am still in Utah, holding down a job with health insurance benefits (slightly important for a certain September event!).

Thank goodness we can talk and text every day and occasionally email.  Today I got some pictures in my email.  Look how gorgeous the weather has been!

May 12, 2011 - Hiking to McKinley Lake with Kathleen and Kinley

May 14, 2011 - Childs Glacier at the "end of the road"

May 25, 2011 - Eyak River - fishing with Cory Hollinger.  They both got skunked!

2 weeks from today, I fly to Boise.  2 weeks from tomorrow, I will be in Cordova with my sweetheart.  Yes, I am counting down the days!

P.S. I had my 24 week appointment today.  I got to hear Lincoln's heartbeat (James thinks it sounds like a little steam engine) and it is still strong and regular.  He's growing right on target and everything seems to be boringly, perfectly normal - Hooray!  My next appt is at the end of June at 29 weeks.

Ensign Peak and Sessons Mtn Trail - May 26-27, 2011

May 26, 2011 - Had lots of energy and lots of light on a Thursday afternoon, so I found a short low-elevation hike.  All the hiking in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are still snowed under, so low-elevation is the only choice.  I'd never hiked Ensign Peak before, so that is where I went.  The trailhead is close behind the state capital and there is a beautiful park with lots of historical markers.

It is a quick hike, less than an hour round-trip.  Unfortunately some grafitti and lots of fences to keep people on the main trails.  This is the view of downtown - it is so hard to imagine an 'empty' valley that had yet to be cultivated.  And now it is completely filled with buildings and trees and streets.

The marker at the top of Ensign Peak.  There used to be a flagpole, but vandals pulled it down, so it is now on the State Capital property.  I need to explore that too!

May 27, 2011 - There has been pipeline construction in the area, and for the last few days this huge helicopter has been operating in the foothills above North Salt Lake.

I went for a quick hike on the Sessions Mountain Trail.  The trailhead is near the Bountiful Temple and is going to be perfect for summer hikes.  Right along a stream with lots of trees.  And today, it includes a deer.  I only got to hike for about 15 minutes along the trail before I came to a stream crossing that was too busy and too rushing to cross.  Still a 30 minute, pretty wander was a great way to get in my exercise today.

Katie's Quilt - May 14, 2011

Grandma Price has put together a quilt for each of grandkids as we've gotten married or started a family.  This is Katie Castellaw's (soon to be Mrs. Christopher Williams) quilt.

Grandma's having a busy summer, she already made one for Landon & Alicia (Adams) Price (Jul 9).  Next up: Trevor & Emily (Jones) Shuman (?).  After that: Jordan & Ashlee (Jones) Price (Aug 6).  So fun!

Hallie's Baptism Weekend - May 6-8, 2011

WE LOVE VISITING IDAHO!!Playing "Poison" (Freeze Tag) with Uncle James (Carter)

Not sure if Uncle James was the "safe" spot, but the little girls sure loved to run and follow him around. (Christy, Bree, James, Carter & Tyler)

Opa pushing Ellie on the backyard swing and Jake watching.

For Christmas, Mom gave me a copy of "Stone Soup" starring the girls in Oma's preschool.  I brought it with me and the kids (especially Ellie) loved pointing out their cousins and seeing their own pictures. (Bree, Christy, Jake, Jessi and Ellie)

Hallie was the star of the weekend at her baptism and confirmation.  So glad that the Price Grands could come with us! (Before McKayla was baptised in August 2010, we requested that they just plan on being our travel buddies for baptisms.  They made it to McKayla's, Emma's and now Hallie's.)

Afterwards - Opa and Jake

Opa making the 'popcorn' trees snow on the kids.

A video of Opa climbing into the tree to shake petals onto the kids - thank you James for capturing this moment!

A wonderful, fun weekend to witness Hallie's baptism.  Thanks to the Price Grands for coming along and sharing the travel costs.  And then for the company on the long drive back to Utah on Sunday afternoon.  I dropped James off at the Boise airport early in the morning on Sunday.  He made it home to Cordova in time to see his mom (Hi Mom!) on Mother's Day. And I got to spend some time on Mother's Day with my mom (Hi Mom!) and her mom (Hi Grandma!).

P.S. James helped me pick out some maternity clothes for Mother's Day.  Thanks for a very appropriate gift!
