Drifter McCalvy ~ April 2007 - March 2009

In April 2007, on a blustery spring day, 2-year-old Tyler and I went to Zamzows to see the baby ducks and bunnies and chicks and hamsters and fish. He helped me to choose a small red betta fish and some fish food. And Drifter became a part of the Jessi James Gang.

The first time I cleaned his tank, Drifter ran away from home. I had scooped him into a coffee mug about half full of water and while I scrubbed off the algea and rinsed his gravel, he swam in aggravated crazy circles around the mug interior. Poor Drifter! I added more water until the mug was about 3/4 full. Then I added water conditioning drops into his aquarium and went to watch TV with James. A short time later, we went back into the kitchen and Drifter was gone! James searched the sink and checked the garbage disposal - just in case - and then he found our fish. Drifter had jumped out of the mug and onto the kitchen rug. James scooped him up, dumped him in the aquarium, and we watched for signs of life. His front fins were stuck to his sides for a few hours, but otherwise he seemed to have survived his suicidal jump. From then on, he stayed in a glass vase 'motel' while his tank went through cleanings.

Drifter was an experienced traveller. He drifted from family to family whenever James & I spent time away from home. Tucker took good care of Drifter while we spent 3 weeks in Alaska. He also spent time with McKayla, Carter & Bree or Emma & Aspen or Tyler & Christy over several long weekends. Occasionally, he would be left behind on Oma & Opa's counter top with his food and a note. Thank you, thank you to everyone who cared for Drifter.

During December 2008, Drifter was staying on the table at Grandma and Granddad Price's house. On Christmas Night we had lots of family come by and visit. Kyan and Braeden seemed very interested in Drifter and when I investigated, the surface water of the tank was covered in his tiny food pellets and the aquarium water was shaking with the movement of the table. I must have scooped a hundred pellets off the water before rescuing the tank (and the food container) and relocating Drifter to our bedroom dresser.

Drifter lived a happy, long life and passed away from old age at home. His remains were interred in the Great Salt Lake. We know he has gone to swim in the rice paddies of Fish Heaven.
