Brighton Ski Resort - January 24, 2009

James has been 'whining' about not getting enough skiing. But really he has been whining about the quality of the snow. So far, there hasn't been any powder and he keeps checking out big, fat skis from the backcountry.com Gear Room. Today he checked out a pair of Black Diamond Megawatts - for those of you who care, they're an ultra-fat ski with 125 mm underfoot for 188 cm length, rocker tip and zero camber.

We took them to Brighton (thanks for the tickets Jen!) and prepared to ski on two-week-old-Salt-Lake's-in-an-inversion-with-High-Pressure-and-no-end-in-sight snow. But James must have been doing some snow dance or weather prayers in between mild whining because it began to rain on Friday in the valley and of course that means snow. Saturday was a beautiful snowy ski day and James LOVES the Megawatts. He says that if all the runs (especially the groomers) had two to ten inches of fluff, he'd be happy to ski on that pair forever.

James also had one of his ALL-TIME FAVORITE EVER ski runs today. He'd be thrilled to tell you about going out-of-bounds past Milli Bowl and poking around some cliffs and chutes and ending up in the Hourglass Chute where he had to point these big, fat skis straight down and then into the fluff for some beautiful turns.

He really tried to 'submarine' the tips of these in the snow. He COULD NOT get the tips to dig in, no matter how far forward he skied - at one point he was leaned over with his hands almost down to the skis. I need to try some super fats in the powder sometime!

Tree skiing between Thunder Road and Doyle's Dive.

Following James through the trees - "Where are you Jess?" "Taking your picture with my phone!"

Actual snowflakes in my hair - that High Pressure system stayed WAAAAAY too long.

Snowflakes twinkling in the light. We started skiing about 12:30 and stayed until 8:00 p.m. I haven't night skied in a snow storm in a long time. It was fun!
ARE YOU JEALOUS YET?
Cleaning the storm off the car!

The view through the windshield of James' cleaning off the glass. (Isn't it wonderful to sit in the car all cozy while my wonderful husband puts the skis in the rack and clears all the windows - it is good to be spoiled!)
And hooray for the gas fireplace in the living room in our little apartment. All our gear dried out super quick - of course I'm glad no one came visiting while our ski gear was spread out all over the living room and the couch and the chairs and a plastic tub in front of the fireplace.
(Due to my lack of digital camera and my desire to blog more often, all these pictures are cell phone photos. Except for the picture of the megawatts - I pilferred that off of the Black Diamond website. So the quality of the rest of the pictures is iffy, but hey, I blogged about an event within two days rather than within two months! Just for you Mom!)

New Ward! - January 11, 2009

The website said 11:00 a.m. So we went - ON TIME - and arrived to find the local singles ward greeting people at the door. Not our ward.

So we went into the Relief Society / Elders Quorum of the ward which began at 09:00 a.m. Not our ward.

So we went home.

Then we went back to church at 1:00 p.m. - ON TIME!!! Twice in one day! - and finally found our ward.

Super friendly ward. Someone introduced themselves before we even found a place to sit. The ward bulletin included a questionaire for new members to fill out in order to request records. Someone else introduced themselves as we stood up to find a new seat for Sunday School. Before that conversation was finished, Bishop Putnam came over to introduce himself and then introduced me to Sister Clifford, the Relief Society President, who had come up while we were talking to the bishop. Before church was out, I had a copy of the Relief Society photograph directory (I haven't had one of those since I was a member of a singles ward!) and had my picture taken for the upcoming revised Relief Society photograph directory. Whew!

New Apartment! - January 10, 2009

A HUGE thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you to everyone who helped us move - Uncle Glen, Craig, Brett, Jason, Grandma, Granddad & Wells Cargo. Especially since it was Saturday & there was snowboarding to be done! We loaded Grandma & Granddad's car up with clothes, loaded the Wells Cargo trailer up with furnature and boxes, loaded The Outlaw & Little Blue up with miscellaneous everything else and headed down the road to our new apartment in North Salt Lake.

They almost had us unloaded before lunch - thank goodness the Papa John's pizza arrived before they were through - I didn't want my generous helpers to go without pizza & rootbeer! Grandma got my kitchen put together & the guys got our bed & couch/futon put together before they left, so now we just need to unpack and figure out where to store all this stuff! Thank goodness for lots of closet space!

HOORAY for my James. He broke down all the moving boxes (the ones not worth keeping) and hauled them and our garbage out to the dumpster. MY HERO!

It is a cute little 2-bedroom 1-bath apartment in a 4-plex. Ours is the upper left apartment (without the bicycle on the porch). The upstairs units have higher ceilings. It has a fireplace in the livingroom and a laundry room and a back porch. It is small, but clean and in good condition and I LOVE the fireplace, having laundry inside the apartment, and it is only 7 miles to work! About 14 miles to James' work - beats a 45 mile commute!

This is the view from our back porch - spare lot for the apartments nearby, the freeway, and an oil refinery. Thank goodness for good windows that keep out the noise! Actually, at night the view is really pretty. Just lights in the darkness.

When we arrived at the apartment to begin moving in, there was a package propped against the front door. It was from James' parents in Alaska and it included the beautiful "Welcome Friends" sign at the beginning of this post - what a fun housewarming gift. THANK YOU!

Idaho Trip - January 2-4, 2009

The weather finally cleared & the freeway opened long enough for a quick weekend trip home. Grandma & Granddad came along for the ride and we got into Eagle late Friday night. Early Saturday morning we participated in my niece's blessing - Ellie is 3 months old, but she waited until Kim's family (in Eagle) and Deven's family (up from Albuquerque) could all get together. Kim did a beautiful job on the dress! We had a houseful too! Here is just the Simpson side of the family.

Standing: Kristen & Clay. Jake, Carlee, Christy & Kurt. James, Bree (Kim's) & Jessi. Ellie, Kim & Deven.

Sitting on the back of the couch: Aspen (Kristen's), Tyler (Kurt's), and Carter (Kim's)

Sitting: Emma (Kristen's), Grandma and Granddad. Mom, McKayla (Kim's), & Dad

After the blessing, we got in an afternoon of skiing at Bogus Basin - that means that Grandma and Granddad and Mom stayed home with the smallest munchkins and the rest of us met up with Jed's family on the ski hill for a chilly afternoon.

Christy, Oma & Jake preparing for a quiet afternoon.

James & I got to ski with McKayla, Hannah & Hallie on chair 1 for our first run. We skied through the terrain park - the girls wanted to do the jumps at the beginning of each of the rails) and down Shaker's Ridge. By the time we got to the bottom, they were ready for a hot chocolate break. So James headed out on his own & I got the girls back inside. As soon as I had adult backup, I met up with James for a few runs before we had to come inside to ward off frostbite on our toes. We did get in few more runs with Dad - and then hurry and pack up because our ride had cold, tired kids to take home.

Hallie (Jed's)

Hannah (Jed's)

Sunday we went to our old Eagle 3rd ward - Kim & Deven's new ward. Then on the road back to Utah. It was a very very very quick trip, but we're so glad we could go!

Brighton Ski Resort - January 1, 2009

Happy New Year!

We spent the first day of 2009.... skiing! We went to Brighton with Uncle Doug, Aunt Suzie, Michael & Shelby. James & Michael explored every jump on every run and we only saw them long enough for a group photo. Oh, and lunch.

I spent the day on the groomed runs with the rest of the gang. We had a great day! Toward the end, I introduced Shelby to 'rabbit runs' - the bumpy, sneak-between-trees trails along the edges of other runs. She did great! On our last run, I let her lead the way down the trails & she soon out-distanced me! I can't snowplow that fast anymore.

Happy New Year! - January 1, 2009

Thank you U.Glen & A.Nancy for hosting a very fun New Year's Eve party - we planned to ditch out early and get some sleep, but we were having such a good time that we stayed AFTER midnight playing Nines with U.Doug & A.Suzie, Scott, Chad, & A.Karen

2008 Review

I saw a similar post on Jenna's blog & LOVED the idea - so here is 2008 in review for the 'Jessi James Gang'! Actually, most of these are the pictures I had picked out as potentials for our Christmas Card. I finally chose four, but why not share them all? All these pictures are in other places in the blog, but it was very fun to hit some of the highlights all together.

March 11, 2008 - Mt. Rose Ski Resort near Reno, NV - The lake in the background is Lake Tahoe. Mt. Rose has two-for-one on Tuesdays and some really, really fun runs. There is a section of the mountain called "The Chutes!" This means I skied the chutes and James skied the ridgelines and hopped over rocks. We visited James' Uncle Rod & Aunt Laura & cousin Jonathan. We stayed in a casino in downtown Reno - I think James won $2 at a machine and then lost it again! We spent a day in Virginia City and saw wild horses and toured an old mine. We spent our last day driving along the shore of Lake Tahoe.

May 17, 2008 - Cascade Airport, ID - James got his private pilot license in January, and we finally got to fly together in May. We rented the plane from his flight school, Jetstream Aviation, and made arrangements for Uncle Neil to pick us up at the Cascade Airport. We flew over Bogus Basin to see the melting snow and then did a 'touch & go' at the McCall Airport before landing in Cascade. We had lunch with U.Neil, Oma, U.Norm & A.Marlene before flying home again. Of course, James scouted West Mountain and the snow available as we climbed up above Cascade.

May 25, 2008 - Sheridan Glacier - We spent almost a month in Alaska for a wonderful vacation / high school graduation (Congratulations Kathleen!) / job interview (Alaska Troopers, try again another year) / family reunion / mission homecoming (Congratulations Brian!)... I have a whole scrapbook full of pictures, but this is one of my favorites. I also saw an actual, living ice worm at this glacier!

May 30, 2008 - Delta Junction, AK - The Alaska Highway was constructed during World War II and connects the lower 48 to Alaska through Canada. It runs from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Delta Junction (about 100 miles southeast of Fairbanks). Completed in 1943, it is 1,522 miles long. This is the only bit of the highway I've been on - but we have plans to drive the highway together sometime! We drove past these incredible mosquitos & I had James turn around and go back for some pictures!

July 5, 2008 - Waterfall near Ogden, UT - During the Price Family Reunion, a small group of us (Mom & Dad, Cody, Aunt Lynn & Chelsea) hiked from the trailhead at the top of 29th street to the base of this waterfall. Then we went to Lagoon!

July 11, 2008 - West Mountain near Cascade, ID - We went skiing in July! Jed, Kurt, James & I brought our ski gear to the Simpson Family Reunion and hiked for a few turns. Later the same day, there was waterskiing and canoeing on Cascade Reservoir!

August 29, 2008 - Trailhead to Vanity Lakes near Stanley, ID - Jessi, James, Kathleen & Kathy. Not pictured: Gil, Jed, Hannah, Hallie, and Stella. We had a great trip - there were minor injuries and fishing lures in the tree branches and perfect pan-sized trout and mountains to climb and snow!

August 31, 2008 - Overlooking Upper Vanity Lake - James & I hiked to the top of the highest ridge above the lakes - We had a beautiful view of all the lakes we fished, the next valley & even a few deer.

September 1, 2008 Labor Day - Vanity Lakes campsite - Gil, Hannah, Kathy, Jessi, James & Kathleen - James was excited to get 'first tracks' all the way to the car. We stopped at Kirkham Hot Springs on the way home to finish thawing our toes!

September 6, 2008 - Yellowstone National Park - We got to drive with James' sister Kathleen to BYU-Idaho. She had freshman orientation, so we left her to get settled in Rexburg and explored Yellowstone.

September 7, 2009 - North East Entrance near Silver Gate, MT - This was our first time out the North East Entrance of the park - it is so pretty! We found an inexpensive campsite a few miles outside the park and even saw wolves (from a very very very long distance through a borrowed scope - never forget your binoculars while visiting Yellowstone) along that stretch.

September 27, 2008 - Boise River Greenbelt - Kurt & Carlee, Tyler, Christy & Jake invited us to spend a Saturday on the Greenbelt with them We had a wonderful time & I'm embarrassed that this is James' first adventure on the greenbelt and we've lived in Eagle for 2 years!

October 23, 2008 - Boise River in Eagle, ID - Simpson Family photo. Left side: James & Jessi /Kurt, Christy, Tyler, Carlee & Jake. Center Left: Clay & Kristen, Emma & Aspen. Center: Gil & Kathy Simpson Center Right: Jed & Maria, Tucker, Hannah, Hallie, Stella & Zoe Right: Deven, Ellie, Kim, Bree, McKayla & Carter

October 23, 2008 - Eagle, ID - This year we have a new nephew - Jake Wendell - born July 1st and an new niece - Ellie Jane - born September 19th. This (obviously) is Ellie - just over a month old & so, so sweet.

November 26, 2009 - backcountry.com warehouse, Salt Lake City, UT - We moved to Utah on November 1st and began new jobs on November 3rd. James now works for Backcountry.com in the warehouse. He started out in inventory (pulling items from the warehouse to be shipped), but he was quickly moved to backstock. Now he spends all day looking for 'suspends'. Items that have been ordered, but are in backstock and need to be picked and put into regulary inventory so they can be picked and then shipped. I think I have the process right.

November 26, 2009 - Intermountain Life Flight hangar, Salt Lake City, UT -
I work for Intermountain Life Flight (again) as their Lead Billing Specialist - I have one other employee on my team! We live with Grandma & Granddad Price (THANK YOU!) and commuted from Ogden to our jobs in Salt Lake City. It is about 45 miles each way and an hour of commute, depending on traffic. We carpool, leaving home at 5 am! Since it is winter, usually not getting back until after dark.

November 28, 2008 - Temple Square, Salt Lake City, UT - Now that we live in Utah, James' sister Kathleen came to Ogden for Thanksgiving. We really enjoyed her visit and made the most of it - a Utah Jazz NBA basketball game, turkey dinner, skiing at Brighton Ski Resort, and a visit to Temple Square to see the Christmas lights.

December 27, 2008 - Wolf Mountain Ski Area in Eden, UT - Seems like skiing has been part of Christmas for ... forever. We enjoyed having Christmas with Grandma & Granddad Price and then skied for the first time at Wolf Mountain Ski Area - the closest one to G&G's house.
